Introduction
This sheet of notes is provided to assist you / our clients with the selection, templating & installation processes required for interior stone projects.
This should be read in conjunction with our quotation / order confirmation.
1. Stone Selection & Place Order
Your key activities in this stage:
- Select / confirm material choice & details.
- Pay deposit to confirm order based on our quotation.
- Prepare area for templating (or supply template).
Samples can be obtained from our Ipsden Yard to help with material selection.
Samples are always 'indicative' (of colour / texture / finish, etc). Stone (granite, marble, slate, limestone) is a natural material, so variations in colour, blemishes & natural inclusions often occur and must be expected / celebrated.
Natural variations in stone may include veins, colour, shell content, and occasionally texture. The level of variation varies according to the type of stone in question.
It is often possible to choose the actual slab materials to be used at our wholesale stockist / slab importer warehouses. Please ask for advice.
Quotations are based upon the information provided to us (e.g., approx size, layout, cut-outs, pipe-holes, notches, visible edge preparations, etc.). Clearly, if the actual work involves additional details, these are chargeable at standard rates.
On downpayment to place an order, this will be taken as confirmation of material selection, and AFJ will proceed with material procurement. (N.B. By sourcing the slab materials, we are then well placed to complete the production in a timely manner).
2. Templating / Agree Details
Your key activities in this stage:
- Complete preparations for Templating (and give us notice for templating service).
- Be available to discuss template / details.
- Agree / approve all the details & dimensions and/or layouts for manufacture (sign off AFJ templating sheet).
It is important that the precise and final conditions for the stone elements are in place prior to any measurement or templating work.
We recommend that you adopt our templating service for several good reasons:
- We are happy to receive templates made by you; however, please note fit-up risk will be with you.
- Please ensure that you allow for some cutting tolerance (1-2mm each cut), joint widths, and all other installation considerations such as lifting / access / placement.
Note that if we have to revisit the site in order to re-measure / re-template, this will be chargeable at our standard rates.
We request a notice period of at least 10 days for templating so that we can plan our visit.
As a minimum, the following items will need to be prepared / in final condition at the time of templating (e.g., kitchen projects):
- Supporting cabinets complete / leveled.
- Walls prepared (e.g., tiles removed and plastered and/or skimmed).
- Notch out positions clear and measurable.
- Plumbing first fix (e.g., positions for drilled holes, under-mounted sinks in position / fitted).
- Electrical first fix (e.g., holes or notches clear).
- Any pipes or conduits chased into walls.
- Exact sizes of cut-outs (e.g., for sinks & hobs, etc.).
- Screeds laid / architrave or skirting removed.
- In summary, all interfacing items complete & fixed, full extent measurable, and nothing to change between templating and the installation work.
We will take a photo of the area and create our cutting schedule from the measured template.
We will use a standard 'sign-off' sheet at the time of templating to agree on the next steps.
3. Production / Manufacture / Delivery
Your key activities in this stage:
- Approve any final / updated production information.
- You may be called upon to review & approve source materials prior to manufacture.
- Final preparations for installation phase (e.g., remove temporary water / gas / electricity feeds).
- Arrange for a plumber / electrician to be on hand if needed.
- For supply-only items, arrange pickup from our Ipsden Yard.
- Pay the 50% balance before the fit start date.
We will produce drawings / cutting schedules from the site templating / measurements. All critical dimensions will be labeled for your review.
Normally, we will ask you to approve layouts for manufacture.
Please allow a minimum of 2-3 weeks for manufacture. We will provide approximately 1 week's notice of our installation proposed date / dates.
If the area is being used in a temporary condition, these must be fully disconnected.
Key items and under-fitted items should be placed at this stage.
Some materials will have natural features or blemishes. Marbles and limestones may require stopping, cramping, or color-matched resin filling.
If you have self-sourced the material for us to work on, the risk of material integrity remains with you.
If this is a supply-only quotation, we will not have included delivery unless specifically stated.
For delivery, our price includes a 'kerb-side' drop-off by one person. A two-person drop-off will be higher in cost.
4. Installation / Fit
Your key activities in this stage:
- See the above section for preparation activities.
- Provide 10 days notice for the 'ready to install' date.
- Arrange for a plumber or electrician to be on hand if needed.
If the stone installation follows on from completion of works by others, allow 1-2 weeks for our team to plan.
Our price includes for local seating, bedding, and grouting unless otherwise stated.
Our scope is to install the stone itself only. Additional works will be chargeable.
If an additional visit is required, it will be charged as extra work.
Stone sealant or after-care kits are available for purchase. We recommend Lithofin products.
5. Completion / Maintenance
Your key activities in this stage:
- Consider purchasing a maintenance kit from AFJ.
- Arrange decorative filler / caulking with your painter / decorator.
Thank you for using AFJones. We would welcome any feedback on our service.
All quotes are subject to site survey and our standard Terms & Conditions.
Orders under £1000 require full pre-payment. Orders over £1000 require a 50% down-payment, with the balance payable before delivery.
